The Summit opened in 1975 and was home to the NBA's Houston Rockers for whom the arena was primarily constructed. However, it was also the home ice of the original
Houston Aeros of the
World Hockey Association from 1975 until 1978, as well as the latter
International Hockey League/American Hockey League incarnation of that team from 1994-2003. It also was the home of the
Houston Thunderbears (later called the
Texas Terror) of the Arena Football League from 1996 through 2001. The city's
Major Indoor Soccer League team even took their nickname from the arena before moving to Baltimore. The basketball and hockey teams moved to a new downtown arena in 2004. Today, The Summit is now a megachurch.
