The New York Stars played in the
World Football League (WFL) in 1974, opening their season against the
Jacksonville Sharks. Unable to use Yankee Stadium or Shea Stadium, the Stars were forced to play their home games at Downing Stadium on tiny, hard to reach Randall's Island. After their 7th home game, a contest with the
Detroit Wheels, they left the Big Apple and headed for Charlotte. For one game, against the
Chicago Fire, they were the Charlotte Stars but became the Hornets upon their arrival in North Carolina.
