The Thrashers were Atlanta's NHL team from 1999 until 2011 when they moved to become the new incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets. The old Jets had moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Coyotes. The Thrashers launch marked the return of pro hockey to Atlanta after the Flames, founded in 1972, left for Calgary in 1980.
