The Atlanta Apollos began as the Atlanta Chiefs and played in the National Professional Soccer League in 1967. When that league merged with the Untied Soccer Association to form the North American Soccer League, the Chiefs followed. The team was sold in 1973 and while it stayed in Atlanta, it was renamed the Apollos but lasted only 1 more season.
