The Birmingham Bulls first hit the ice in 1976 as members of the World Hockey Association (WHA)
. The team had spent the previous three seasons as the Toronto Toros
before heading to Alabama. The Bulls drew 8,400 fans a game in their first season,8,700 in their second, and 6,300 in their third and final campaign. In 1979, the National Hockey League absorbed three of the 5 remaining WHA teams. However, the Bulls and the Cincinnati Stingers
were not included in that agreement.
