The Birmingham Bulls first hit the ice in 1976 as members of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The team had spent the previous three seasons as the Toronto Toros before heading to Alabama. The Bulls drew 8,400 fans a game in their first season, 8,700 in their second, and 6,300 in their third and final campaign. In 1979, the National Hockey League absorbed four of the six remaining WHA teams. However, the Bulls and the Cincinnati Stingers were not included in that agreement.
